Fressingfield Sports Pavilion
The Fressingfield Sports Pavilion (Club House) is situated on the playing field off Laxfield Road surrounded by the village sports facilities; football pitch, tennis courts and bowling green and the children's play area. Its function is to provide a venue for community activities and facilities for the sports clubs based on the playing field. At present organisations including the Royal British Legion, Neighbourhood Watch and the Friendly Club base their activities at the pavilion and the Tennis and Bowls clubs make use of changing facilities. The building is also available for private hire for parties and other social functions and for a venue to host meetings, exhibitions, classes and business and community use. Village events such as the recent Jubilee celebrations and the Scouts St George’s day parade as well as village fete, flower show and games that take place on the playing field and make use of the amenities provided by the Pavilion.
All these facilities were created and paid for by volunteers of the community of Fressingfield and are owned and managed by the Fressingfield Playing Field Management Committee on behalf of the village and the users of the playing field. A separate committee, the Sports and Social Club Committee manages the building on behalf of the community and users of the building. A part-time manager/caretaker has been appointed by this committee to oversee the day to day running of the building. From the outside it looks as if the building has seen better days although plans for exterior redecoration are in hand. However, the interior is pleasantly attractive, consisting of two large airy rooms which can be divided, a modern kitchen and well stocked bar.
Since early 2014 the interior has undergone extensive renovation and refurbishment, with the intention of reducing running costs and becoming 'greener' in energy usage and, more importantly, of improving the ambience of the rooms for the benefit of those who use them. The ceilings and walls have been insulated, ceiling tiles in the new room replaced, the roof repaired and sealed, the lighting renovated and the walls redecorated. Grants for these improvements were obtained from Mid Suffolk District Council, Suffolk County Council (Guy MacGregor), and Green Suffolk (John Taylor), without which the work would not have been possible, and the support of the Parish Council was greatly appreciated. Some of the work was carried out by volunteers from the Social Club and the Royal British Legion, and has resulted in a warm and welcoming atmosphere in the rooms.
Indoor games facilities, pool table, dart boards and table tennis table are available for use. Residents of the parish of Fressingfield and members of affiliated clubs are entitled to free membership of the Sports and Social Club. This is to comply with the terms of the bar license which stipulates that all uses of the bar must be members of the Social Club. So do not think it is a members only club, as all are welcome.
To keep such an important and well-liked village facility in existence it is important that it is used by the community who created it and whom it serves. This means supporting forthcoming events such as the Friday Club Nights and other advertised events (check out the What's On page for more details); or, by considering hiring the building as a venue for your next big party, meeting or event. The cost of hiring the hall and its facilities is £7.50 per hour.
